South Tyneside Council – Hebburn Minewater Scheme

The Hebburn Minewater scheme will use geothermal energy from abandoned flooded mines in the former Hebburn Colliery to heat public sector buildings in the town, including a high-rise residential block. £7m scheme, secured over £3.9million in funding from the European Regional Development Fund, is being developed in collaboration with the Coal Authority and Durham University.

Target mineworkings were recently hit at a depth of 291m below ground. Testing of the minewater has also revealed that the temperature is warmer than anticipated, which will result in significantly higher annual carbon savings than previous estimates of 319 tonnes. The first phase of the network is expected to be complete by December 2023.
