Telford & Wrekin Council – Energy efficient leisure centres

In August 2022, council-owned Newport Swimming and Fitness Centre fully reopened following a major refurbishment at the site which included Carbon Reduction Scheme work as part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and its On Your Side investment programme into the borough.

The work included installation of a new air source heat pump to replace the centre’s existing gas system, and saw internal cladding added to the building.

The swimming pool floor was remodelled to reduce the depth of the deep end and increase the shallow water area, making the pool more energy efficient. This also increased the capacity of the swimming lesson programme, whilst still allowing all existing activities to continue.

Among many other carbon reduction enhancements, pool lighting was upgraded to energy-saving LEDs, a new air refrigeration system was installed in the fitness suite and new windows were installed in the pool hall.

While leisure centres across the UK are struggling with energy costs, Telford & Wrekin Council’s work at Newport Swimming and Fitness Centre has secured the well-used venue’s future for local residents while also delivering carbon emissions reductions estimated at more than 100 tonnes per year.
