Southwark has already cut the council’s carbon emissions by 37% since 2010, but as only a small percentage of the borough’s carbon emissions are caused by the council, we know there is far more we need to do. We have taken steps to encourage residents to think about the ways they use their cars by introducing idling fines for drivers who leave their engines running while idle, closing roads around schools to encourage people to walk or cycle to school instead. We are incentivising people to move to electric cars by fitting over 80 electric vehicle chargers across the borough since 2018, and is set to reach 150 by spring 2020. We are tackling the barriers that stop people cycling by creating almost 8km of new cycleways in the last year, and have successfully lobbied TfL to extend the Santander Cycle Hire scheme to Canada Water and the Rotherhithe peninsula.
