Viking Energy Network in Jarrow is a £11.8 million renewable energy scheme and the first of its kind in the UK, due to the combination of technologies used. It will cut annual carbon emissions by an estimated 1,035 tonnes, as well as saving half a million pounds a year in fuel costs.
Water will be extracted from the Tyne, converting this into useful heat energy in the form of hot water, distributing this through a network of insulated pipes to public sector buildings across Jarrow.
The scheme successfully secured £3.5million in ERDF funding due to its innovative nature. Currently under construction, the scheme is expected to be operational by Autumn 2022.
