Manchester City Council – Electric Refuse Collective Vehicles

Manchester City Council has made a £9.8 million investment into decarbonising its waste collection fleet and improving air quality by replacing 50% of the original diesel fleet with electric vehicles.

Twenty-seven electric refuse collection vehicles (eRCV) were purchased to replace diesel vehicles, which is expected to save 900 tonnes of CO2 per year and help to improve air quality across the city.

A successful campaign helped launch the vehicles in 2021, when we ran a naming competition to encourage members of the public to name the first five of the fleet. The winning names were Sparkus Trashford, Usain Volt, Trashiena, Bin Diesel and Binspiral Carpets.
