Like many boroughs, Lewisham Council has been developing a programme of sites for school streets. The School Streets schemes aim to radically reduce traffic around schools during drop-off and pick-up times, improving road safety and air quality for children travelling to and from school each day and thus creating a safer healthier environment for pupils and parents. The programme has also helped as part of the COVID recovery, allowing pupils and parents to social distance and preventing overcrowding on the pavements by school gates.
The scheme has been very popular among residents and the council has escalated the implementation of School Streets to allow for a safe and healthy return to school for pupils, parents, teachers and local residents.
