Lewisham Council – Lewisham’s first parklet

Lewisham Council worked alongside e-scooter sharing company Spin and community space designer YesMake to create the borough’s first ‘parklet’ – an all-weather proof shelter which offers covered seating, a bicycle rack, and extra space for pedestrians.

The parklet has helped with social distancing, allowing local businesses to serve more customers in a COVID-secure way, for example by enabling businesses to offer outdoor dining to customers without reducing pavement space. This has complemented Lewisham Council’s work towards creating low traffic neighbourhoods and promoting sustainable travel as a viable option for residents.

The structure is built from mainly reused materials, including naturally fallen ash tree branches that have been used for the support beams.
