Lewisham Council used temporary traffic orders to put in a timed closure of Coulgate Street in Brockley, restricting access to motor vehicles. A number of cafes and local businesses are located on Coulgate Street, as well as Brockley train station.
The closure enabled local businesses to serve customers in a Covid-secure way, for example by enabling outdoor dining to customers. Feedback from both residents and businesses has been extremely positive, with people getting a ‘real life’ insight into how our streets can feel if they are reprioritised.
Following this positive feedback, the road closure has now been made permanent. This has enabled the Council to go further in its efforts to prioritise walking and cycling, as well as maintaining space for social distancing for Lewisham’s Covid recovery.
